Summary

Factors to check when reviewing performance on SSDs

Description

The performance of the drive does not match the values provided on the product pages.

Resolution

Many factors can affect performance results. Provided below are a few factors to check.

  • Depending on the system configuration, some platforms share bandwidth across storage connectors. Confirm the drive is using the optimal connection and BIOS settings for best performance options by referencing the system user manual.
  • Make sure you have the latest SSD firmware.
  • The Intel® Memory and Storage Tool provides options for some drives to improve performance.
    Notes
    • Drives under test should be connected to the system as a secondary (non OS) drive.
    • For PCIe* NVMe* drives, typically these will have a 'P' in the SSD Model name. Some capabilities noted below may require the Intel® NVMe driver to be installed if supported. Confirm support on the driver page for your specific Intel® SSD.
    • Download the application.
    • Under the Select a Feature drop down, there may be options including SSD Optimizer (TRIM) and Performance Booster.
NoteBoth of these features have specific requirements for support and may not be available on all products.
    • There is also an option to run a Diagnostic Scan. A full scan should be done to make sure the product is in a healthy state. See the User Guide for more details.
  • Some PCIe NVMe drives have an Evaluation Guide that defines the proper system settings for benchmarking. Check the support site .(If available, this will be under the Maintenance & Performance subsection under your product).
  • Formatting the disk can help recover performance in some cases.
NoteAlways back up data regularly and before proceeding as this process removes all data from the drive.
