Error Code - Resizing the Drive for Acceleration with Intel® Optane™ Memory

Environment

Windows® 10, 64-bit*

BUILT IN - ARTICLE INTRO SECOND COMPONENT
Summary

Description of Error Codes listed and steps to resolve the issue.

Description
  • Unsupported System Drive: Last Partition Unable to Resize Error
  • One of the following Error Codes was received when managing an Intel® Optane™ memory device: 0xA0000002, 0xA001004B, 0xA001004C, 0xA001004E, 0xA0010053, 0xA0010054, 0xA0010055, 0xA0010059, 0xA001005D, 0xA005004E, 0xA005004B, 0xA0050055, 0xA0070008, 0xA0070011
Resolution

To support system acceleration with Intel Optane memory, the drive to be accelerated must contain at least 5 MB of continuous unallocated space at the end of the drive. Intel Optane memory needs this space to store configuration information to successfully pair the drive with the memory module.

This error indicates that the software could not locate enough space on the drive during enabling, or something on the system blocked the software from shrinking the volume to create the space.

You may encounter this issue due to:

  • Not enough free space on the drive to be accelerated.
  • A locked partition at the end of the drive, commonly a recovery partition. After an OS upgrade, the system may generate a locked partition at the end of the drive.
Notes
  • Back up all data/files before proceeding with the steps below.

  • If the recovery partition at the end of your system disk is from your original equipment manufacturer (OEM) or motherboard vendor, we suggest working with them before proceeding.

To resolve this issue, manually shrink the disk to be accelerated by following these steps:

  1. Open Disk Management by pressing the Windows* key + x.
  2. Right-click the partition at the end of the disk to be modified.
  3. Select Shrink Volume.
  4. Enter 5 MB in the Enter the Amount of space to shrink in MB field.
  5. Press Shrink.
  6. Attempt to enable acceleration.

If this option is not available, the partition may be locked (typically a recovery partition) and the software cannot automatically adjust the size [0xA0010053, 0xA0010054, 0xA0010055, 0xA0050055, 0xA0070011]. In this case, try to manually resize the partition using one of the third-party tools below:

Additional information

If this is not successful, check the following for additional reasons the system cannot provide this space:

    • Not enough space
      • (For HDDs) If there is no space, defrag the system volume to create shrinkable space.
        • Press the Windows key and type Defragment. The Defragment and Optimize Drives app should be available in the options.
      • Is the capacity of the drive completely in use?
      • Unsupported Disk Type [0xA0000002]
        • Acceleration with Intel® Optane™ memory does not support Dynamic type drives, only Basic type. See here for more details.
      • Unsupported Partition Structure [0xA0010059]
        • Acceleration with Intel® Optane™ memory does not support the MBR partition structure, only GPT. See additional options on converting  the partition structure from MBR to GPT.
      • Unsupported File System [0xA001005D]
        • Drive to be accelerated and partitions must be of NTFS file system.
