How to check if a second Intel® Xeon® Processor can be added to a system

Description

Is it possible to add a second Intel® Xeon® Processor to my system?

Resolution

Yes, if all of the following is verified:

  1. Verify that the system's motherboard has a second socket. It is also recommended to update to the latest system BIOS.
  2. Verify that the second Intel Xeon Processor has the same processor number. Mixing processors even from the same family is not recommended.
  3. Verify that the Intel Xeon Processor supports the scalability of two processors. To check this:
    1. Visit the Intel Product Specifications website.
    2. Search or navigate to your processor's specification page.
    3. Look under the Expansion Options for Scalability. A value of 2S means that the processor can be used in a 2-socket system.
