An integrated suite of open-source computer codes for electronic-structure calculations and materials modeling at the nano scale.

Speedup Increased 1.4X1

Quantum ESPRESSO* is coordinated by the Quantum ESPRESSO Foundation of which the CINECA National Supercomputing Centre (Bologna) is a member. Quantum ESPRESSO has a growing worldwide user community in academic and industrial research. ESPRESSO is an acronym for opEn-Source Package for Research in Electronic Structure, Simulation, and Optimization*. Its intensive use of dense mathematical routines makes it an ideal candidate for manycore architectures, such as the Intel® Xeon Phi™ coprocessor.

Quantum ESPRESSO is based on density-functional theory, plane waves, and pseudopotentials. It has evolved into a distribution of independent and interoperable codes in the spirit of an open-source project.

Running Quantum ESPRESSO code version 5.0.2+ on the Intel® Xeon Phi™ coprocessor requires minimal modifications in the Quantum ESPRESSO build process and no Quantum ESPRESSO source modifications.

GRIR443 is a public PRACE benchmark suited for multi-node execution. AUSURF112 is a publicly available DEISA benchmark suited for single-node execution.

Performance Results

Quantum ESPRESSO* 5.0.3 GRIR443 performed up to 1.4X faster with the Intel® Xeon® processor E5-2697 v2 and the Intel® Xeon Phi™ coprocessor compared to the Intel® Xeon® processor E5-2697 v2 baseline.

Quantum ESPRESSO* 5.0.3 AUSURF112 performed up to 1.2X faster with the Intel® Xeon® processor E5-2697 v2 and the Intel® Xeon Phi™ coprocessor compared to the Intel® Xeon® processor E5-2697 v2 baseline.

Product and Performance Information

Benchmark results were obtained prior to implementation of recent software patches and firmware updates intended to address exploits referred to as "Spectre" and "Meltdown". Implementation of these updates may make these results inapplicable to your device or system.

Software and workloads used in performance tests may have been optimized for performance only on Intel® microprocessors. Performance tests, such as SYSmark* and MobileMark*, are measured using specific computer systems, components, software, operations, and functions. Any change to any of those factors may cause the results to vary. You should consult other information and performance tests to assist you in fully evaluating your contemplated purchases, including the performance of that product when combined with other products.
