Transcoding with Intel® Xeon® Processor E3-1200 v4 Product Family
Media service providers require transcode solutions with cost-efficient, dense designs and sufficient performance to support real-time, multistream delivery of high-definition video. A data center graphics server based on the Intel® Xeon® processor E3-1200 v4 product family does just that.
Transcoding is the direct conversion of one encoding format to another, such as for movie data files. This is usually done in cases where a target device does not support the original format or resolution. Typically transcoding refers to a two-step process in which the original data is decoded to an intermediate uncompressed format, which is then encoded into the target format.
Media transcoding performance is generally measured by how many simultaneous output streams can be transcoded while maintaining a 30 frames per second frame (fps) rate.
For this comparison, a 500 frame h.264 input file with a resolution of 1920x1080 and a frame rate of 30 fps was transcoded using Intel® Media Server Studio 2015 R3 Essentials Edition software on the target device to multiple simultaneous mpeg2 output files of the same resolution. The number of streams was increased until the output frame rate dropped below 30 fps. The simultaneous real-time HD streams per rack within a given industry-standard rack is shown as a relative gain from prior generation Intel® Xeon® processor E3 v3 family with Intel® HD Graphics P4700 to E3 v4 family with Intel® Iris Pro Graphics 6300.
