What Is Multicloud?
There’s no such thing as one size fits all when it comes to the cloud. Some of your applications must be able to scale up quickly to meet dynamic computing or storage needs. Others may need to be hosted in certain geographic areas to meet data privacy regulations or minimize latency to end users. Still others, like legacy applications or mission-critical workloads, must be hosted on your on-premises infrastructure.
A multicloud architecture is one that combines resources from more than one type of public or private cloud. For example, you may choose one public cloud service provider based on a specific service-level agreement and pricing structure, and another for its geographic location. Likewise, you might have private clouds available in different locations. A multicloud strategy gives you the freedom and control to make uncompromised use of your available resources.
With a multicloud environment, you’re free to choose a custom solution for your application and business needs on a case-by-case basis.
Creating a Multicloud Environment
A multicloud strategy requires a cloud management software layer to integrate and orchestrate multiple public and private clouds. Solutions from providers like VMware are designed to enable hyperconverged infrastructure in multicloud environments, giving you a consistent experience among clouds. Other solutions are available from top cloud services providers, such as AWS Outposts*, Google Cloud’s Anthos*, and Microsoft Azure Stack*. These solutions make it easy to share data and applications between cloud resources and seamlessly scale between on-premises infrastructure and the public cloud.
Containerized applications, such as Red Hat OpenShift*, are also a good fit for multicloud deployments. Multicloud container solutions help developers and operations teams ensure that an application or service can run reliably wherever it needs to be deployed.
