Over the last four years, Intel IT’s proactive investments and innovations—including deploying advanced storage, networking, and facilities solutions—have increased the performance of our data centers. What’s more, we have improved the efficiency and achieved IT sustainability goals even as the number of data centers has been reduced from 150 to 69 worldwide and our global server count has decreased from 100,000 to 75,000 worldwide.
But Intel IT realized that true business value would occur if we optimized solutions to directly support individual lines of business. By taking advantage of emerging virtualization and cloud computing technologies, we were able to improve cost efficiency and business agility in the following operations, including:
- Design: To support quicker design and validation of increasingly complex Intel processors, we've created large, shared distributed grid computing solutions complimented with high performance computing.
- Office/Enterprise: To deliver on-demand self-service applications, we transitioned from a traditional enterprise infrastructure to an enterprise private cloud built on a highly virtualized infrastructure.
- Manufacturing: Improving factory automation and supply-chain planning efficiency for Intel’s manufacturing facilities meant deploying a dedicated, highly reliable data center infrastructure.
- Services: Highly available online netbook applications are a new approach to support Intel’s external service businesses. For example, the Intel AppUpSM center offers Intel services to help validate apps and software.
