Sri Lanka Science & Engineering Fair (SLSEF)

Sri Lanka Science & Engineering Fair (SLSEF) is a collaborative effort of the following partners:

  1. Ministry of Education (MoE) of Sri Lanka
  2. National Science Foundation (NSF)
  3. Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL)
  4. Intel® Education

Sri Lanka Science & Engineering Fair (SLSEF) has been duly affiliated with Intel® International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF) in USA for the first time in October 2007.
Therefore, winners of SLSEF each year who meet the eligibility criteria of Intel® ISEF would get an opportunity to compete/participate at the Intel® ISEF held in USA in the month of May each year.

Intel® International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF)

The Intel® International Science and Engineering Fair® (Intel ISEF), the world's largest international pre-college science competition, provides an annual forum for more than 1,500 high school students from 65 countries, regions, and territories to showcase their independent research as they compete for over $4 million annually. The Intel ISEF is the premier global science competition for students in grades 9–12.

Intel assumed sponsorship of Intel ISEF in 1996 and in October 2008 extended its commitment to the program through 2019.  The Society for Science & the Public (SSP), a non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C., has administered Intel ISEF since its inception in 1950.

Participation at Sri Lanka Science & Engineering Fair (SLSEF)

Sri Lanka Science & Engineering Fair (SLSEF) will be held in December each year.  The competitors for this fair will be selected from the following two competitions.

  1. Science Research Project Competition (SRPC) of National Science Foundation  (NSF) of Sri  Lanka in November each year.

  2. Junior Inventor of the Year (JIY) competition of Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL) in October each year.

The ten best projects of each of the above two competitions of NSF and IESL will compete together at SLSEF competition.  Intel will sponsor two individual finalists (two students) and one group finalist (maximum of 3 students) along with the adult-in-charge from NSF/IESL.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

  1. Eligibility criteria for the participation at Intel International Science & Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF 2012)
    Students should be within 14 to 19 years of age by May 1, 2013. (NOT less than 14 years or more than 19 years by 01 May 2013). (NEW CHANGE)
    ○ All members of the group project should be within above age range.
    ○ Number of members in a group project should not exceed more than three.
    ○ Only two individual projects and one group project will be allowed to  participate  at the Intel ISEF provided they reach the expected standards.
    ○ Teachers are not sponsored by Intel to participate at the international fair.
  2. Judging criteria
    ○ Judging criteria of the SLSEF is based on Intel ISEF criteria. The local  competitions, SRPC conducted by the NSF & JIY conducted by the IESL do not follow the exact criteria of the Intel ISEF and therefore winners of a local competition may not be selected as the winners of the SLSEF.
    ○ Winners will be selected by a panel of judges comprised of eminent scientists/ academics in the country. Decision of the evaluation panel will be final.
  3. ecognition of the students at the SLSEF
    ○ National Awards, Merit Awards and International certificates will be awarded to the students based on the evaluation of their projects.
    ○ International certificates will be awarded for projects conducted under specific fields. These certificates will be awarded only to the students who are not eligible to participate at the International fair.
  4. Intel will sponsor two individual finalists (two students) and one group finalist (maximum of 3 students) along with the adult-in-charge from NSF/IESL.

Renewal of Sri Lanka Science & Engineering Fair (SLSEF) MoU - 2012/2013

The renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the Sri Lanka Science and Engineering Fair (SLSEF) for year 2012/2013 took place on 19th September 2012 at the Ministry of Education, Battaramulla, Sri Lanka. 

The MoU was signed by Mr. S. M. Gotabhaya Jayaratne, Secretary to the Ministry of Education, Mrs. Anusha Amarasinghe, Director, National Science Foundation, and Mr. Indika De Zoysa, Country Manager of Intel Sri Lanka. Also present at the occasion were Mr. Anura Dissanayake, Additional Secretary, H. E. President's Office, Mrs. Rohini Wijayarathne, Consultant to the Science Popularization Division and Ms. Nadeera Jayaweera Scientific Officer of NSF and Mr. Priyantha K. Weerabahu, Intel Education Program Manager, Sri Lanka.

Renewal of Sri Lanka Science & Engineering Fair (SLSEF) MoU - 2010/2011

The renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the Sri Lanka Science and Engineering Fair (SLSEF) for year 2010/2011 took place on 8th April 2011 at Mahinda Rajapaksa College, Homagama. 

The signatories to the renewal of the MoU, which seeks to reaffirm the partnership between Ministry of Education (MoE), National Science Foundation (NSF), Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (SLSEF) and Intel EM Ltd, were Mr. H. M. Gunasekera Secretary of MoE, Eng. (Dr.) Sarath Abayawardana of Director of NSF, Eng. (Prof.) A. K. W. Jayawardane of IESL and Mr. Indika De Zoysa of Intel.

Renewal of Sri Lanka Science & Engineering Fair (SLSEF) MoU - 2009/2010

The renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the Sri Lanka Science and Engineering Fair (SLSEF) for year 2009/2010 took place on 31 August 2009 at Isurupaya.  A collaboration between the Ministry of Education (MoE), the National Science Foundation (NSF), Institute of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL), and Intel, SLSEF is affiliated to the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF) - the world’s largest pre-college science competition. 

The signatories to the renewal of the MoU, which seeks to reaffirm the partnership between the stakeholders, were Mr. Nimal Bandara of the MoE, Dr. Sarath Abayawardana of NSF, Eng. H. D. S. De Alwis of IESL and Mr. Indika De Zoysa of Intel.  A national platform for showcasing student scientific ingenuity, SLSEF aims to unite young scientific minds and enhance innovative thinking, while investing in a new generation of pioneers in the fields of math and science.  Affiliated to Intel ISEF, winners of SLSEF represent Sri Lanka at the world’s preeminent science competition for pre-college students.

Signing of Sri Lanka Science & Engineering Fair (SLSEF) MoU  - 2008/2009

Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on 7th February 2008 at the Ministry of Education (MoE) Sri Lanka by the representatives of four partners to Sri Lanka Science & Engineering Fair (SLSEF). 

The signatories were as follows.

Salient Facts of SLSEF MoU

  1. NSF and IESL in collaboration with the MoE and Intel® desires to organize the Sri Lanka Science and Engineering Fair (“SLSEF”) with the objective of enhancing the innovative thinking amongst school children and youth in the country as well as developing a scientific temperament.
  2. SLSEF is a platform for science students to discover their scientific genius and win public recognition at national and International level.
  3. National level winners of SLSEF will be eligible to represent Sri Lanka at Intel® International Science and Engineering Fair (“Intel® ISEF”).

Laying the Foundation for Sri Lanka Science & Engineering Fair (SLSEF)

A high level team from Sri Lanka participated at the Intel ISEF 2007 in Albuquerque, New Mexico to learn and prepare for setting up the Sri Lanka Science & Engineering Fair (SLSEF).  As a result of this preparation and some hard work by the team, SLSEF was duly affiliated with Intel ISEF and the first competition was held in year 2007 itself.  Now the winners of SLSEF 2007 are ready to participate at Intel ISEF 2008 in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
